Our recommendations are built the same way every time, so you can check our working. Each ingredient match is backed by an evidence grade — established, well-supported or emerging — drawn from peer-reviewed dermatology, never from retailer copy.

1. Match your answers

The quiz matches products to your concerns and budget, and excludes ingredients you tell us to avoid — including known pregnancy and allergen cautions.

2. Score on ingredients

Products gain points for ingredients and tags that address your concerns, sourced from each product’s ingredient list and the retailer’s own data. Well-established actives count for more than emerging ones.

3. Pick the best price

Within each routine step we rank by match first, then price, then name. Prices are checked regularly, and each product page shows when its price was last checked.

4. Prefer the retailer we’d buy from

Where prices tie, we prefer retailers whose stock we can verify. We never rank by commission.

The evidence behind it

The routine builder weights your results on a reviewed ingredient library and standard skin-typing — the four Baumann skin axes and the Fitzpatrick phototype — rather than on what a brand claims. Safety rules (pregnancy, under-18, allergens and a per-routine irritation budget) are applied separately and never move a ranking.
